      • Lesson Five

        A Corpus-Based Pronunciation Course

      • Rationale

The purpose of this lesson is to help students grasp the significance of suprasegmental aspects in English pronunciation, which include linking, intonation, word stress, and pausing. Assigning different suprasegmental features to a sentence can result in different meanings. Throughout the course, students will analyze samples from corpora and identify suprasegmental issues within them. Therefore, an introductory lesson on major suprasegmental features in English pronunciation will equip students with the necessary knowledge to analyze corpus data and their own speech data effectively. By comparing the suprasegmental features of Chinese and English in this lesson, students will gain a deeper understanding of their own challenges in mastering the suprasegmental features of English and the reasons behind their difficulties. This awareness will enable them to make improvements in these areas. Therefore, this lesson prepares students for subsequent course activities and enhances the overall effectiveness of the course.
