Lesson Nine
A Corpus-Based Listening Course
Rationale
This lesson centers on students’ self-reflection on the challenges and difficulties they encounter in understanding English speech, particularly focusing on those caused by pronunciation. Beginning with a foundation in English varieties and exposure to diverse accents, students embark on a journey of recognizing and analyzing their personal listening obstacles. Through categorizing errors by pronunciation elements like vowels, consonants, and stress patterns, students engage in metacognitive reflection, deepening their understanding of their linguistic hurdles.
Moreover, the presentation aspect of the lesson encourages students to structure their insights and observations, enhancing not only oral communication but also critical thinking skills. Through sharing experiences and proposing solutions for their comprehension issues, students are promoted to do peer learning and collaboration.
Crucially, by guiding students to develop personalized strategies for listening improvement, the lesson targets cultivating autonomy and self-directed learning. Empowered with these tools, learners are equipped to continue improving their language skills independently beyond the classroom setting
