      • Lesson Seven

        A Corpus-Based Pronunciation Course

      • Rationale

This lesson serves as a practical session where students will collaborate in pairs to analyze their recordings of the passage Why do you people usually have an accent? In Lesson 6, students have already analyzed and identified suprasegmental issues in corpus data produced by other Chinese ESL learners, which has familiarized them with common suprasegmental issues and the use of corpora. As the primary objective of this course is to help students improve their pronunciation, the remaining part of the course will focus on shifting from analyzing the pronunciation issues of others to identifying their own.

However, students may find it challenging to identify some of their own pronunciation problems due to their familiarity with their own pronunciation patterns. To ensure a more accurate and objective diagnosis, we introduce a pair of fresh eyes into the assessment by asking students to work in pairs. This approach allows for a more comprehensive assessment as students can provide feedback and insights to each other, enhancing the overall effectiveness of the pronunciation analysis process.
