        A Corpus-Based Listening Course 

      • Rationale

        This lesson is designed to continuously enhance university students’ listening comprehension skills by exposing them to a variety of Expanding-Circle English varieties including French, Indonesia, Japanese, Korean, Brazilian, and Russian English. The necessity for such a comprehensive approach stems from the global nature of English and the increasing interaction with diverse English speakers in academic, professional, and personal settings. By familiarizing students with the characteristics of different English accents, the lesson aims to equip them with the ability to understand and communicate effectively across a range of linguistic contexts.

         

        Each activity within the lesson is purposefully structured to address specific listening skills. Activities like multiple choice and fill-in-the-blanks focus on detailed listening and vocabulary recognition, which are essential for precise understanding. Listening comprehension exercises challenge students to grasp main ideas and details from longer passages, enhancing their ability to follow extended speech. Dictation activities are included to improve exact transcription skills, emphasizing attentive listening and accuracy.

         

        Overall, the lesson plan not only builds on students’ existing knowledge but also expands their listening proficiency and adaptability. This is crucial for their academic success and future career opportunities where understanding varied English communications is indispensable.
